What every employer should know

What does it mean to hire an intern?

Hiring an intern is a commitment. You’re telling a person that you are willing to give them a place to land on their feet. An opportunity to gain some real world practice working for an awesome company -yours. These candidates are ready for your opportunity. They’ve been mentored and now need your help to get the experiences and a reference that they can use to apply for permanent employment after the 120 day internship period expires. Unless you explicitly make an offer at the end of the internship, their stay at your company is only temporary. All of the candidates go in knowing that this will not be a permanent offer.

What’s the process for these guys?

At this time, most of the candidates are still living inside the walls of a prison. For an excellent reference of what that means for them or to ask them questions directly, check out their post on Quora. Through The Last Mile, they share their writings using social media about many subjects that will give you insights into who these people are and what their personalities are like. Additionally, one of our colleges’ Michael Santos offers unique insights into the prison system as he chronicles his own 45-year term. Michael discusses the process that it took to earn his freedom and become a renowned contributing member of society.

The candidates on this site are going through a similar journey. Together with your help, we are bridging the gap to permanent freedom by connecting them to -and preparing them for -your internship before they are released. You hold the critical opportunity that will make a the difference.

What is expected of me as an employer?

Your commitment as an employer is temporary. Right from day one your new intern is aware that this opportunity is designed around a 120 day time frame. The expectation of you as an employer is that your offer be a paid part-time internship offer. We are asking for our employers to commit to a minimum range of between 10 – 30 hours per week at a rate of $15 to $20 an hour.
